Papers of Louis Janin, 1859-1914 (bulk 1859-1894).

The collection consists of two letterbooks containing press copies of Janin's business and personal correspondence between 1878-94, a number of incoming letters (primarily from the Concepcion Mining & Milling Co. for the years 1887-89), several property appraisals authored by Janin in the 1870s, and 47 notebooks and pocket diaries kept by Janin between 1859-89. These notebooks and pocket diaries contain financial accounts, addresses, memoranda, experimental data, and rough notes for mining surveys.

Louis Janin (1837-1914) was a mining engineer educated at Yale and then at the Freiberg Mining Academy. He began his career in the Western United States, making his first mark on the profession on the Comstock Lode in Nevada in the early 1860s, and later obtained experience in mining fields all over the Far West.
